Kondo quantifications

Chemists at Caltech and Yale quantified the Kondo effect of seven transition-metal atoms embedded in copper, using the actual atomic and electronic structures of the materials.

“It is now possible to predict the properties of some complicated materials purely through computation without referring to experiment,” said Caltech’s Garnet Chan. “These first materials that we have studied are like a baby step, or a prototype problem, along the way to more complex phenomena such as high-temperature superconductors and quantum magnets.”

This work was published in Science.

Global Quantum Forum

Chicago’s Global Quantum Forum released a video archive of select panels from the event this summer. They include remarks by Ruslan Shaydulin, Head of Quantum Computing at JPMorgan Chase; Tom Wilson, CEO of Allstate; Chris Cartwright, CEO of TransUnion; Ravi Kumar, CEO of Cognizant; and Jacob Glassman, Deputy Assistant Secretary of War.

Xanadu

The Canadian government loaned Xanadu, the photonic quantum computing company, more than $140 million USD for the development of a $640 million USD manufacturing facility in Toronto. Xanadu received about $29 million USD through the same program in 2023. The plant will be housed in a former Cambpell’s Soup factory and is expected to employ 275 once operational, CBC News reported.

The agreement requires that the project be completed in 2031 and for the financing to be repaid in 20 years, according to sdx central.
