Military quantum spending
Bloomberg broke news of a bipartisan spending package that would increase annual Department of Defense spending on quantum development and applications to $567 million — 68 percent more than today. The article also highlighted an increase in federal lobbying by the quantum industry.
“When we first started doing this two years ago, we struggled to get meetings with staffers on the Hill,” Infleqtion CEO Matthew Kinsella said. “Now, we’re meeting directly with senators and representatives.”

UCLA NQVL
UCLA detailed its recently announced NSF National Quantum Virtual Laboratory project. The $4 million “FTL: Accelerating Fault-Tolerant Quantum Logic” effort will design a fault-tolerant, trapped-ion quantum computing stack with 60 logical qubits, including quantum error correction, compilation, control systems, and target applications. The team is led by UCLA’s Eric Hudson and includes researchers at Berkeley, Cornell, the University of Maryland, the Georgia Tech Research Institute, UC Santa Barbara, SRI International, Quantinuum, Nvidia, Daylight Solutions, and IonQ.

Cancer modelling
Researchers at IBM and Cleveland Clinic demonstrated a quantum machine learning framework to predict which cancer tumor mutations trigger an immune response. The model can learn from training sets with as few as 150 samples. It allowed them to conduct full-length peptide modeling on quantum hardware using 46 qubits.
