MIT GPT

Researchers at MIT used OpenAI’s GPT‑5.6 Sol and its Codex software engineering platform to develop agents that coordinate experiments, run measurements, analyze the results, and decide what to try next.

The setup ran measurements on an uncalibrated six-qubit superconducting chip that the team routinely uses to benchmark its fabrication process. The agent chose measurement parameters, operated the hardware, analyzed the resulting data, and then either refined the measurement or saved the result for use in the next measurement. All with little user intervention.

“I can have agents running measurements for many hours overnight or while I’m working in the cleanroom,” Beatriz Yankelevich, the MIT PhD student who developed the tool, said. “I can check in from my phone, see what they’ve done, and steer them if something needs fixing or if I want to explore a different direction.”

NEC & Fujitsu

Most of the developers who worked on quantum computing hardware at NEC have departed for Fujitsu, according to Tom’s Hardware. “[NEC} quietly ended development of physical quantum computing machines in March 2026...NEC declined to comment on whether it had exited quantum computer development and said that it continues to evaluate practical applications and industrialization of quantum technologies as well as conduct proof-of-concept projects with customers. Therefore, the move appears to represent an exit from development of actual quantum computers rather than from quantum technology altogether.”

The move was first reported by the Japanese publication Diamond Online.

IonQ

IonQ unveiled its Superion 256 quantum computing platform this week. It includes fully integrated 256-qubit quantum processing units that were manufactured at SkyWater Technology, the semiconductor and quantum foundry acquired earlier this summer by IonQ. It is based on the technology IonQ used to 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity in October 2025.
