NSF announced funding for eight Quantum Leap Challenge Institutes this week, naming three new projects and renewing five others that launched in 2020 and 2021. Each will receive about $35 million in support. The three new awards are:

Replication challenges

Researchers at Technical University of Applied Sciences Regensburg in Germany evaluated more than 5,000 quantum-related research papers, both manually and with an automated system, and showed that most of the papers do not include the details necessary to reproduce the experiments and findings.

Only about 25 percent of the papers included code that could be run independently. Among the papers that were manually evaluated, about 65 percent of the code in papers that included it could be successfully executed.

“Quantum computing and software systems are in their infancy and changing rapidly. Reproducibility becomes more of a priority as the field matures,” the University of Chicago’s Fred Chong argued. “Innovation may be more important [for quantum computing] than reproducible infrastructure at this time,” says Chong.

NVIDIA

A story in EE Times described a hybrid computing system at the Barcelona Supercomputing Center in which an NVIDIA GPU-based system runs with three quantum computing platforms. The article also discussed the NVIDIA’s “Ising” family of AI models that support more automated methods of qubit calibration, in some cases reducing the calibration process to a matter of hours.
