IBM’s trusted quantum computing

In a trio of computations with several partners, IBM demonstrated what they believe is quantum advantage, offering new ways of validating the calculations even though they cannot be completed using known methods on classical machines.

“I want to be very careful, because we’re not claiming quantum advantage,” IBM’s Jay Gambetta told Barron’s. “The more nuanced word is ‘trusted computation…’ We’re in this new era where quantum advantage experiments are happening. These methodologies show you can trust the quantum computer. Then you can move to the next step, which is looking at useful applications where you can trust the output.”

IBM demonstrated their approaches to trusted computing in a random circuit sampling problem with the University of Chicago; a simulation of oscillation in magnetic materials with Qedma, Quantinuum, and RIKEN; and a similar simulation with Algorithmiq.

The work was described in a preprint and technical report from IBM. It was also covered by IEEE Spectrum.

Hybrid system for PSC

Rigetti and HP Enterprise will build a hybrid quantum-classical testbed system at the Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center. It will include both GPUs and a Rigetti Novera QPU. The testbed, called TangleLab, is supported by a $5 million grant from the National Science Foundation.
