Genesis Q
The Department of Energy’s new Quantum Genesis Q Competition will award up to $215 million to demonstrate the world’s first fault-tolerant scientifically relevant quantum computers. The program is open to public-private partnerships. Phase I will provide fixed awards for early milestones, worth up to $1.5 million per awardee. Phase II will consist of a $100 million to be split amongst awardees that can demonstrate a first-generation systems with at least 100 logical qubits. There will be bonus incentive pools, each worth $50 million, for demonstrations of 150 and 200 logical qubits.
DOE also announced the Quantum High-Performance Computing Validation and Verification Testbed Lab program for national labs. Focused on characterizing and validating the entire quantum computing stack, it includes up to $45 million in funding.

Anderon
Having finalized its Department of Commerce CHIPS funding earlier this week, the pure-play quantum foundry Anderon announced its leadership. CEO Mukesh Khare and CTO Jason Orcutt come from IBM, Anderon’s parent company.

X-ray sensors
A team from NIST, the University of Colorado Boulder, Los Alamos, Houghton University, and Sorbonne University in Paris developed an array of quantum sensors to help monitor the amount and type of nuclear material at power plants and weapons facilities. Using the sensors, they were able to measure, and account for, confounding X-ray emissions from plutonium, uranium, and neptunium. Thus, they can record hazardous gamma-rays and more accurately characterize nuclear materials.
