The Denver Post reported that Atom Computing will “most likely” develop a new $158 million R&D facility in Boulder, Colorado. The the article mentions Chicago as another possible location. The investment would come on the heels of Atom raising $100 million in VC and earning a $100 grant from the Department of Commerce this summer.

Atom has had an outpost in Boulder since 2022 that is currently home to about 85 employees.

Friday’s story noted recent approval of more than $4.3 million in tax incentives by the Colorado Economic Development Commission that would hinge on the creation of 225 net new jobs paying an average annual wage of more than $230,000. The state has also approved more than $10 million in enterprise zone tax credits for Atom Computing, spanning the current state budget year and next due to their size.

Photon Queue, a University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign spin-out developing room-temperature quantum memory technology, received $500,000 from New Mexico Economic Development Department and Roadrunner Venture Studios to expand its operations in Albuquerque. The company plans to lease space in Roadrunner’s facilities and conduct assembly and testing there.

UCLA’s Prineha Narang wrote an opinion piece in Financial Times, arguing that, while private capital has begun to invest aggressively in quantum technology companies, “what capital has lacked so far is a demand signal. A guaranteed buyer at a national laboratory will do for quantum what early defense and space contracts once did for silicon.”
